Nacho Mastretta (a musician from Santander who lives in Madrid)
spent all the 80's and a part of the 90's playing in some groups
that few people now remember like Las Manos de Orlac (later Las
Manos) or La Marabunta. He also earned his living by working as
a sound technician and creating music for fashion parades. It has
been now that lounge aesthetics has made peace with the World when
Mastretta's scores start to be taken into account, although he prefers
to distance himself from Esquivel or Les Baxter ("if I use exotic
rhythms is not just for playing the Indian"), and also from any
kind of revival in general, alluding to the great masters of popular
music as his main references: Americans such as Cole Porter, Gershwin
or Henry Mancini, Brazilians such as Jobim and Europeans as Nino
Rota. These references are quite similar to the ones of Barry Adamson,
whom he shares some features (both have composed for cinema, maybe
the most suitable milieu for Mastretta's climatic music); however,
if Adamson shows himself as "disturbing noir", the one from Santander
prefers the colourist hullabaloo and the hot rhythms maybe because
of his Latino ancestors (his mother is Mexican). His presence in
any important Spanish music festival, like Sónar, Experimentaclub
or Espárrago, is enough to persuade even the most sceptical ones,
that Mastretta is, finally, a figure that is going up in the World.
